Beauty in Diversity I by Eghosa Raymond Akenbor / DEMIF Gallery

Eghosa Raymond Akenbor lives in the Edo State, City of Benin (Nigeria). Eghosa is influenced by the historically significant Benin city and the Bini tribe: “The rich Benin court art works, which are known throughout the world, have elaborate decorations of their monarchs, chiefs, and nobles. Their shrine installations and costumes of their religion often have a bold use of red. This, amongst many other things, are a force behind my art.”

Beauty in Diversity has two mixed-media canvas works. Both canvases have a mixture of large and smaller floating collaged fabrics and photos that create a sense of textile bodies and bustling urbanism. The collaged shapes, applied freely by Eghosa’s hands, are inspired by two themes: circular shaped earrings crafted from African fabrics and the pebbles or diamonds of necklaces, and patterns and motifs from the urban environment. The photographic visual media are from western magazines and calendars, to join the African and Western world. Eghosa is inspired by fashion publications, and the colourful fabrics adorning the women in these magazines.

He is represented by DEMIF Gallery and has been selected twice for participation at the first and second International Biennale of Art of Palermo, Italy, 2014 & 2015.
