Hex 1st Form by Frances Pinnock

Frances Pinnock is a London based artist maker whose sculpture pieces explore the effects of time and environment on English Oak bark tanned leather. Referencing the human form, she works with full thickness sole bend leather produced by the last remaining Oak bark tannery in the UK. Twisting together yarns of hemp with beeswax Frances meticulously and meditatively stitches each form together by hand.

Frances’ pieces evolve through a continuous dialogue between drawing and pattern cutting, using hand-made inks for print paintings that both document and influence each form. She applies slow and respectful hand processing to the leather, creating sculptural vessel forms. Her vessels are minimalist abstractions referencing the human figure and forms in the natural world, but the works are predominantly process led, working to explore the materials limits in creating shape and volume.

Hex 1st and 2nd Form investigate a repeated pattern piece formulated around a hexagonal base. The variation in tone across the surface of the leather is the result of natural oxidation while working the material in the heat of summer.

Frances obtained a BA in Modelmaking from the Arts University Bournemouth in 2014 before going on to work in London’s luxury leather interiors and bespoke luggage industry. In 2017, she received both QEST and Heritage Craft Association scholarships. In 2019 and 2020 respectively, she was granted the Cockpit Arts Worshipful Company of Leathersellers Award.
